Emilia Smechowski


Emilia Smechowski was born in Poland in 1983 but fled to West Berlin with her family in 1988. She studied opera singing and Romance languages in Berlin and Rome before taking up journalism. She was an editor with the newspaper tageszeitung and now writes and reports as a free-lancer for, among others, Geo, Süddeutsche Zeitung and Die Zeit. Her essay on the invisible Polish people was awarded the Deutscher Reporterpreis, the Konrad Duden Journalistenpreis, and the German-Polish Tadeusz Mazowiecki Prize for Journalism.
